Marquis de Fénelon was a diplomat belonging to an old French aristocratic family. He and Proust became acquainted in the late 1890s, possibly through the circles of Robert de Montesquiou or Lucien Daudet. One likely connection was Paul Hervieu, whose literary and social gatherings Proust frequented. Fénelon’s charming and somewhat enigmatic personality left a strong impression on Proust, who was particularly discerning about those he admitted into his close circle. A delicate, perhaps even ambivalent friendship developed between them, marked by intellectual admiration and subtle rivalry. Fénelon’s charm embodied an archetype that Proust would later employ in characters such as Saint-Loup and the aristocrats surrounding Charlus.
Fénelon moved with ease in the Parisian mondaine circles, where writers, aristocrats, artists, diplomats, and bankers intermingled. In these social networks, status and recognition were conferred by social rank, outward appearance, and conversational skill. Fénelon was known for his elegance, understated wit, and ability to please a wide range of people – qualities that Proust deeply valued.
Proust never directly modelled a character on Fénelon, yet scholarship has identified him as a likely inspiration for Robert de Saint-Loup: a young aristocrat receptive to literary and philosophical discussion. Although Fénelon’s life – just like that of Saint-Loup in the novel – ended at the outset of the First World War (he fell in combat in 1914), he received a “new life” within Proust’s gallery of characters.
